LOT Polish Airlines, Poland’s national carrier, has taken a pivotal step in its evolution by placing a firm order for 40 Airbus A220 aircraft: 20 A220-100s and 20 A220-300s. Announced at the 2025 Paris Air Show, this order marks the airline’s first-ever purchase of Airbus aircraft, representing a historic milestone in its fleet modernization strategy.

The agreement not only strengthens the partnership between LOT and the European manufacturer but also paves the way for a potential future expansion of up to 84 A220 units.

“A Bet on the Future”

According to Michał Fijoł, CEO of LOT, this acquisition aligns with a long-term vision: “Today’s decision is about the future. The Airbus A220 family, which will begin joining our fleet in 2027, unlocks new opportunities for development and growth—key pillars of our strategy.”

Fijoł emphasized that these aircraft will enable the airline to compete more effectively in the European market, solidify its position as the preferred carrier in Central and Eastern Europe, and prepare for its role in Poland’s upcoming Central Communication Port (CPK).

The response from Airbus was equally enthusiastic. Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Executive Vice President of Commercial Aircraft Sales at Airbus, welcomed LOT to the Airbus family: “This order for 40 A220s marks a historic moment as we officially welcome LOT Polish Airlines to the Airbus family.”

He highlighted the A220 as the ideal tool to support LOT’s fleet renewal and route expansion, assuring close collaboration to ensure seamless integration of the aircraft into the airline’s operations.

A220: Performance, Efficiency, and Comfort

The Airbus A220 is the most advanced aircraft in its category. Designed for routes of up to 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 km), it can carry between 100 and 160 passengers, depending on the model and configuration.

  • The A220-100 is tailored for the 100-135 seat segment.
  • The A220-300 accommodates 120-160 passengers.

Both models are powered by Pratt & Whitney’s state-of-the-art PW1500 GTF engines, renowned for their fuel efficiency and low noise emissions. Compared to previous-generation aircraft, the A220 offers a 50% smaller noise footprint and the lowest fuel burn in its class.

The introduction of the A220 will allow LOT to gradually replace its regional fleet while unlocking new routes and destinations that were previously economically or operationally unviable. This flexibility will be instrumental in expanding the Polish carrier’s network.
