United Airlines has rolled out a series of upgraded features on its mobile app designed to streamline flight connections, just in time for the busy summer travel season. Starting now, passengers with layovers at any of the airline’s U.S. hub airports can access a dedicated section of the app offering personalized, real-time information.
What’s Included in the New Features
The revamped in-app experience includes:
- Countdown to the next flight.
- Step-by-step directions to the boarding gate, including estimated walking times.
- Real-time flight status updates.
- Helpful tips for long layovers, such as United ClubSM locations.
- Notifications about ConnectionSaver activation.
These features expand the reach of ConnectionSaver, an AI-powered technology that has prevented over 3.3 million missed connections since its introduction in 2019. Now, users can view all this information directly on their phone screens.
Beta Phase Results: A 98% Success Rate
During the testing period this spring, more than 350,000 passengers used the new functionalities. The results were clear: 98% successfully made their connections.
“We know that providing clear, accessible information helps reduce stress for travelers with connecting flights,” said David Kinzelman, United’s Director of Customer Experience. “Our award-winning mobile app takes another leap forward with these tools, offering unprecedented levels of detail.”
Over 20 Million Connections This Summer
This summer, more than 20 million United customers will travel on flights with connections. The new tools address various travel scenarios:
Comfortable Connections
Travelers receive personalized updates on their flight status, boarding countdowns, detailed routes between gates, and suggestions to make the most of long layovers.
Tight Connections
Passengers with limited time gain access to critical information: boarding times, walking distances, gate numbers, and alerts if ConnectionSaver holds their next flight to ensure they can board.
Missed Connections
When things don’t go as planned, the app automatically offers rebooking options: confirmed alternative flights or the ability to join a waitlist for earlier departures.
Future Enhancements on the Horizon
United plans to continue improving the app’s functionality:
Additional Languages
The tools are already available in English and Spanish, with more languages to be added soon.
Advanced Navigation
Soon, users will be able to enable location services for more precise airport directions, including their current position.
Personalized Text Messages
United will expand the use of SMS messages to keep passengers informed about their connection status at all times, whether they have a relaxed, tight, or missed connection.
With these upgrades, United takes a firm step toward a more informed, efficient, and passenger-centric travel experience.
