Brazilian airline Azul received final approval from a U.S. court this Thursday to access $1.6 billion in debtor-in-possession (DIP) financing. This judicial endorsement marks a decisive step in the company’s restructuring process, allowing it to continue normal operations while executing its transformation plan.

What Does DIP Financing Mean for Azul?

The debtor-in-possession framework is used in court-supervised restructuring processes. In this case, it enables Azul to secure fresh funding while retaining operational control of its business—a critical tool for maintaining stability during the reorganization.

In a statement, the company emphasized that this financial boost strengthens its ability to continue providing services and meeting short-term operational commitments.

Agreement with AerCap: Over $1 Billion in Financial Relief

In addition to the approved financing, Azul announced an agreement with AerCap, its primary aircraft lessor and one of its largest creditors. While the deal still requires court evaluation, it is poised to become a cornerstone of the airline’s recovery plan.

The company estimates the agreement with AerCap could yield over $1 billion in savings related to fleet operations. This figure represents significant relief for Azul’s structural costs, enhancing its financial viability in the medium to long term.

Path to Accelerated Transformation

Azul described these developments as part of its “accelerated transformation” strategy, aimed at stabilizing its finances and repositioning its operational model. The airline underscored that the restructuring is being overseen by U.S. courts, providing a robust legal framework for the process.

With the DIP financing approved and the preliminary agreement with AerCap in place, Azul has laid the groundwork for a stronger recovery. If the process continues as projected, the airline could emerge more competitive in a regional aviation market that remains in flux.
