Boeing and two Vietnamese carriers have formalized agreements for the acquisition of up to 90 aircraft, a move that redefines the country’s fleet roadmap and consolidates its ties with the American manufacturer. The announcements, made in the presence of General Secretary To Lam and representatives of the United States Government, encompass orders for 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliner aircraft.
The scale and technical profile of these orders reveal a clear focus: network expansion, operational efficiency, and international positioning in a market projected to double its traffic over the next decade.
Vietnam Airlines Formalizes Its First Order for the 737 MAX
Vietnam Airlines announced the formalization of an order for 50 Boeing 737-8s, marking the first single-aisle order from the American manufacturer by the Vietnamese flag carrier.
The incorporation of the 737-8 will allow Vietnam Airlines to accelerate its growth plans for domestic and regional routes, within an environment where air demand in Southeast Asia continues to rise. According to the company, the country expects air traffic to double, exceeding 75 million passengers annually within the next 10 years.
Dang Ngoc Hoa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Airlines, emphasized that the airline is adopting a “comprehensive and forward-looking” approach that combines fleet modernization, financial resilience, and talent development, aimed at supporting its long-term growth ambitions.
The company highlighted that the investment in these 50 aircraft represents a decisive step toward building a modern, fuel-efficient fleet, while simultaneously improving operational performance and elevating service standards toward international benchmarks. This agreement also deepens the long-term strategic alliance between Vietnam Airlines and Boeing, laying the groundwork for the stated ambition of becoming a five-star international airline by 2030.

Synergy with the Long-Haul Fleet: 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliner
Vietnam Airlines currently operates 17 787 Dreamliners, which cover regional and international routes between Vietnam and Europe.
The 737 MAX – 787 Dreamliner combination offers a 20% to 25% improvement in fuel consumption compared to the aircraft they replace, supporting network expansion while contributing to the reduction of operating costs. Stephanie Pope, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, noted that the combination of the 737 MAX and the 787 will allow the airline to scale its regional networks and strengthen connectivity across Asia.
Sun PhuQuoc Airways Bets on Up to 40 787 Dreamliners
In parallel, Sun PhuQuoc Airways announced an order for up to 40 787 Dreamliners, which will serve as the backbone of its future widebody fleet. This purchase represents the largest order of Boeing widebody aircraft in the history of Vietnam.
The airline will utilize the Boeing 787 Dreamliner to connect international travelers with its hub at Phu Quoc International Airport, reinforcing Phu Quoc’s position as a tourism gateway. Dang Minh Truong, Chairman of Sun Group—the airline’s parent company—explained that the selection of the 787-9 responds to both its superior operational performance and its suitability for realizing the vision of connecting Phu Quoc with the world.
A Strategic Signal for Vietnamese Aviation
The combination of both announcements reflects a phase of structural consolidation and expansion in Vietnam’s commercial aviation sector. With orders spanning from the single-aisle segment to long-haul, the country is betting on a fleet modernization aligned with operational efficiency, network growth, and international connectivity. In a market anticipating strong demand expansion, the strategy combines capacity, range, and consumption reduction as its central pillars.
