Colombia and IATA Strengthen Technical Slot Management to Optimize El Dorado Operations

The Civil Aviation Authority of Colombia (Aerocivil) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) have formalized a strategic alliance to enhance the monitoring and allocation of airport slots (takeoff and landing timeframes). This initiative aims to ensure transparency and operational efficiency at El Dorado International Airport, aligning national management with the most demanding global industry standards.

Strengthening Technical Monitoring and Global Standards

A high-level meeting between the Director of Aerocivil, Luis Alfonso Martínez Chimenty, and IATA’s General Manager in Colombia, Paula Bernal, confirmed that the country will remain aligned with international protocols regarding slot management. To achieve this, the creation of a specialized technical monitoring team operating within the aeronautical authority has been announced. This team will execute a rigorous review and analysis process with the following objectives:

  • Accurate Statistics: Generate detailed data on schedule compliance during the summer and winter seasons.
  • Technical Evaluation: Analyze the actual usage of slots within the country to establish precise conclusions regarding their allocation.
  • Transparency: Implement a more harmonious and equitable organizational model that provides guarantees to all airlines.

International Cooperation and Specialized Training

IATA has reaffirmed its commitment to providing comprehensive support to the Colombian authority through the transfer of technical knowledge and training programs with a global perspective.

This collaboration will be implemented immediately under criteria of efficiency and equity. The primary goal is to strengthen the competencies of the personnel responsible for airport management, ensuring that industry best practices are applied in a structured and progressive manner.

Short-Term Regulatory Stability

It is important to note that, for the time being, the National Government has confirmed that:

  • No modifications will be made to the slot regime currently provided for in the Civil Aviation Regulations of Colombia (RAC 3).
  • Specific monitoring rules will, however, be adopted to improve operational oversight.

Impact on Connectivity and Sector Development

Director Luis Alfonso Martínez Chimenty emphasized that this effort seeks not only to improve internal administration but also to boost national and international aerial connectivity. By promoting fair and transparent conditions, passenger mobility is enhanced, and a more robust and competitive aeronautical system is built to face the challenges of the modern industry.

With this alliance, Colombia reaffirms its commitment to a management model oriented toward citizen service and the sustainability of the aviation sector.
