London Heathrow Airport has reported the busiest February in its history, handling 5.8 million passengers. This milestone, driven by the school half-term break and Chinese New Year festivities, represents a 1.9% increase compared to the previous year.
Operational Performance and Ground Efficiency
Despite the surge in traveler volume, the United Kingdom’s premier hub maintained punctuality levels superior to other European hubs and London-area airports.

- Fleet Optimization: Growth was facilitated by airlines operating larger aircraft with higher load factors.

Capacity Challenge Against Europe
Despite these record-breaking figures, Heathrow faces structural challenges. According to data from the Airports Council International (ACI), the airport’s growth (1.9%) sits below the European average, which reached 4.6%.
Airport management notes that operating near maximum capacity is limiting passenger options and stifling competition. In this context, Istanbul Airport currently ranks as the busiest in Europe, displacing Heathrow in total volume.
Urgency of Expansion
Heathrow’s expansion plans remain the cornerstone of its long-term strategy. Management maintains that the expansion will allow the airport to:
- Add new routes and increase global connectivity.
- Introduce greater competition, resulting in lower fares for users.
- Guarantee the necessary infrastructure for the country to maintain its competitiveness and economic growth.
Strength in the Air Cargo Sector
The volume of cargo handled in February rose to nearly 130,000 tonnes, representing a 4% year-on-year increase. This growth was achieved by optimizing belly-hold capacity on passenger flights, despite having fewer dedicated freighter movements. These figures reinforce Heathrow’s position as the United Kingdom’s most valuable trading port.
