United Airlines has announced the next phase of its long-term strategic plan, projecting the delivery of more than 250 new aircraft through April 2028. This figure represents the highest delivery volume for any airline within a two-year period, aimed at modernizing its fleet, introducing new aircraft variants, and consolidating its position as the leading premium airline in the market.

A Widebody Cabin Experience on Single-Aisle Aircraft

As part of its evolution, the airline is integrating widebody aircraft experiences into its new narrowbody fleet. This includes the debut of the Airbus A321neo “Coastliner” sub-fleet and the Airbus A321XLR, both featuring the “Elevated” interior.

  • These models will feature direct-aisle access seats that transform into fully flat beds in the United Polaris cabin.
  • The patented design offers increased shoulder and elbow room, as well as lower suite walls that balance privacy with a sense of spaciousness.
  • United plans to incorporate 100 of these aircraft to replace 40 Boeing 757 units, a model noted for being less efficient.

Airbus A321neo “Coastliner”

Designed specifically for transcontinental routes, the Coastliner will operate exclusively between West Coast hubs in San Francisco (SFO) and Los Angeles (LAX) to Newark/New York (EWR).

  • Configuration: 20 lie-flat seats in United Polaris, 12 in United Premium Plus, and 129 in United Economy.
  • Exclusivity: For the first time, United Polaris passengers on these domestic routes will have access to the United Polaris Lounge.
  • Innovation: Three seats were removed from the standard configuration to install a snack bar in the rear of the economy cabin.

Airbus A321XLR: International Reach

This variant is designed for short- and medium-haul international routes.

  • It will feature 32 premium seats (16 more than the Boeing 757 it replaces) and suites with privacy doors in United Polaris.
  • The airline expects 50 A321XLR units to join the fleet, opening new destinations in Europe and South America.

Boeing 787-9 “Elevated”: The New International Standard

United has begun receiving its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners with the fully transformed “Elevated” interior. This aircraft will debut on international routes on April 22, flying between San Francisco and Singapore.

United Polaris Studio

The most significant innovation of this model is the United Polaris Studio, a seat 25% larger than the standard business class offering. Its features include:

  • Privacy doors and a companion ottoman in selected seats.
  • 27-inch screens with 4K OLED resolution, the largest among U.S. airlines.
  • Exclusive dining service featuring wine pairings and caviar.
  • Wireless charging and Bluetooth connectivity at every seat.

Regional Innovation: The CRJ450

In collaboration with SkyWest, United will launch the CRJ450 this fall—a redesigned version of the CRJ200 intended to connect smaller cities with its hubs in Denver and Chicago.

This 41-seat aircraft seeks to emulate the private jet experience. In an unprecedented move for U.S. commercial aviation, overhead bins have been removed from the United First cabin to install a large-scale luggage wardrobe, creating a much more spacious and luxurious environment.

Technology and Comfort for All Passengers

The airline is not only focusing on its premium cabins; it is making cross-functional investments to improve the experience for every traveler:

  • Connectivity: Implementation of Starlink Wi-Fi, free for MileagePlus members, which is expected to be available on all mainline aircraft by the end of 2027.
  • Entertainment: United projects having more than 227,000 screens across 1,200 aircraft within two years. The library includes content from Apple TV, HBO Max, A24, and Spotify.
  • Gastronomy: A new partnership with Chef’s Table will bring menus designed by world-renowned chefs starting this summer.
  • Baggage Capacity: Nearly 570 aircraft already feature overhead bins large enough for every passenger to store their rollaboard carry-on.

“United is setting the pace and innovating for our customers at a scale unprecedented in aviation history,” said Andrew Nocella, United’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer.

With the addition of these 250 aircraft, the airline seeks not only to modernize its infrastructure but to redefine brand loyalty through a consistent and superior experience on every flight.
