Air India Strengthens North American Presence Through Interline Agreement with WestJet

Air India has formalized an interline partnership with Canadian carrier WestJet, designed to significantly expand connectivity between India and various regions across Canada and the United States. This collaboration simplifies the travel experience by enabling single-ticket itineraries and coordinated baggage management through major global hubs.

Network Expansion in Canada and the United States

The new alliance allows Air India passengers traveling to Toronto or Vancouver to access an extended network operated by WestJet. This cooperation encompasses a wide range of strategic destinations:

Connections within Canadian Territory

Travelers will be able to connect to 17 cities in Canada, facilitating access to key economic and tourism centers such as:

  • Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, and Winnipeg.
  • Ottawa, Halifax, Regina, and Saskatoon.
  • Regional destinations including Kelowna, St. John’s, Prince George, Victoria, Fort St. John, Terrace, Cranbrook, Comox, and Nanaimo.

Gateway to the United States

The agreement also opens doors to 14 destinations in the United States, enhancing the transborder offering from Canadian points of entry to cities such as:

  • San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Diego, and Las Vegas in the West.
  • Atlanta, Detroit, Orlando, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, and Fort Myers in the East and South.
  • Nashville, Palm Springs, and Santa Ana.

Connectivity via European Hubs

A significant aspect of this association is routing flexibility. Destinations such as Halifax, Calgary, and St. John’s are accessible not only via Canada but also through Air India’s European gateway points, which include:

  • London: Heathrow and Gatwick Airports.
  • Paris: Charles de Gaulle Airport.
  • Amsterdam: Schiphol Airport.

Air India currently operates 75 weekly services to these European hubs, highlighted by 49 weekly frequencies to London Heathrow.

Operational Benefits and Passenger Experience

The primary objective for both operators is to eliminate friction in long-haul travel. According to Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial Officer of Air India, Canada is a critical market driven by strong commercial and personal ties. Meanwhile, John Weatherill, Executive Vice-President of the WestJet Group, emphasized that this alliance aligns Air India’s long-haul strength with WestJet’s robust regional reach in North America.

With the implementation of this interline agreement, the airline seeks to maximize load factors on these routes by offering significantly greater destination capillarity across the American continent.
