Alaska Airlines inaugurated its non-stop service between Seattle-Tacoma and Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci International Airport this Tuesday, marking a major milestone in the company’s history by establishing the first direct link between the “Emerald City” and the “Eternal City.” This strategic move represents the airline’s official expansion into Europe, solidifying Seattle’s position as a premier international gateway.
A New Era of Transatlantic Expansion
The commencement of operations to the European continent is a fundamental step in the airline’s long-term growth strategy. According to Ben Minicucci, CEO of Alaska Air Group, this new route not only strengthens Seattle’s role as a global gateway but also expands how the company connects its passengers to the rest of the world.

The operation is defined by the following key characteristics:
- Frequency: The service is seasonal and will be available through October 23, offering the only daily non-stop flight on this route.
- Departure Times: Flights depart Seattle at 5:30 p.m. and land in Rome at 1:15 p.m. the following day.
- Return Times: Flights from Italy take off at 3:25 p.m. and arrive in Seattle at 5:45 p.m. on the same day.
Strategic Connectivity and Regional Benefits
Beyond direct tourism to Italy, this new service optimizes connectivity for travelers coming from Hawaii. Thanks to the single-stop connection in Seattle, passengers based in the islands now have one of the best link options to Europe, while simultaneously facilitating the arrival of European visitors to the Hawaiian archipelago.
Boost to the Air Cargo Sector
The launch of the Rome route also represents a significant advancement for the airline’s global cargo business. Starting today, the company becomes the first U.S. passenger airline to offer a daily non-stop cargo service between Seattle and Rome. This initiative seeks to strengthen commercial ties between the Pacific Northwest region and Italy. With this addition, the airline’s cargo network expands to a total of 109 destinations worldwide.
This first step into the European market reaffirms Alaska Airlines’ evolution from a regional operator to a player with a global presence, leveraging Seattle’s infrastructure to compete in the dynamic long-haul flight market.
