Iberia inaugurated its direct flights between Madrid and Monterrey on Tuesday, marking a key milestone in its connectivity strategy between Latin America and Europe. This new route not only strengthens the Spanish flag carrier’s presence in the Mexican market, but also establishes a second gateway into the country alongside Mexico City.

A Strategic Move: Flight Plan 2030

The launch of this route is part of the airline’s strategic roadmap, dubbed Flight Plan 2030. This plan aims to consolidate Iberia’s leadership in the transatlantic market and enhance the overall passenger experience.

Despite the current challenging international environment, characterized by rising jet fuel prices, the airline has decided to forge ahead with its expansion plan due to the high significance of the Mexican market. Mexico represents the Latin American country with the highest capacity for Iberia, reaching over 820,000 seats annually—equivalent to approximately 14% of its total offering in the region and representing an 8% increase compared to last year.

Prior to the departure of the inaugural flight from Madrid, a traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at the Spanish capital’s hub. The event was attended by María Jesús López Solás, Iberia’s Commercial, Network Development and Alliances Director; Víctor Moneo, Iberia’s Global Sales Director; and Ana Paniagua, Customer Experience Director for Aena (Spanish Airports and Air Navigation) at the Madrid terminal.

To commemorate the occasion, the airline curated a special onboard experience and provided gifts for all passengers:

  • In Business Class: Customers had the opportunity to enjoy a margarita cocktail, Mexico’s flagship beverage.
  • In Economy Class: Traditional Mexican sweets were served to celebrate the cultural and culinary bridge between both nations.

Enhanced Connectivity in the Mexican Market

To boost the reach of this new route, Iberia recently signed a codeshare agreement with Mexican carrier Viva, which will allow passengers arriving from Europe to connect from Monterrey to 32 destinations within Mexico.

Furthermore, to promote tourism to the Iberian Peninsula, travelers departing from Monterrey can take advantage of the Stopover Hola Madrid program. This initiative allows passengers to schedule a layover in the Spanish capital for up to nine nights—either on the outbound or return leg of their final destination—at no additional airfare cost, while also enjoying discounts and perks on accommodation, transportation, dining, and leisure activities.
