Air Europa Seeks to Connect Madrid with Barranquilla via New Nonstop Route
Air Europa has formally requested authorization from the Civil Aeronautics Authority of Colombia (Aerocivil) to operate a new nonstop route between Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport and Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport, which serves Barranquilla. This strategic connection will not only strengthen the Spanish carrier’s footprint in the South American market but will also establish the only nonstop link between the capital of the Atlántico department and the European continent.
Operational Details
According to the filed documentation, the airline plans to operate this route with a frequency of three weekly flights. Furthermore, the application contemplates operations under third and fourth freedoms of the air.
Although the filing submitted to Aerocivil does not explicitly specify the aircraft type in the application document, the use of Boeing 787 Dreamliner family aircraft is anticipated.
Consolidation of the Colombian Market
The approval of this route would represent a milestone for both the company’s network strategy and the airport development of Colombia’s Caribbean coast region.
Barranquilla would become the airline’s third destination in Colombian territory, joining its current operations to Bogotá and Medellín.
The launch of operations remains subject to technical and legal evaluation by the Aerocivil committee. Once the institutional ruling is issued, the definitive dates for ticket sales and the takeoff of the first scheduled flights will be determined.
