Hong Kong-based airline Cathay Pacific has announced a major expansion of its Latin American network through the addition of new codeshare flights operated in partnership with Iberia, its strategic partner within the oneworld global alliance.
This expansion will add the cities of Fortaleza and Recife in Brazil, Buenos Aires in Argentina, and Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic to Cathay’s network, providing seamless connectivity to these destinations via Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport in Spain.
This move is particularly significant as it introduces Argentina and the Dominican Republic to Cathay’s global codeshare network for the first time, strengthening the flow of connectivity between the territory of Hong Kong and the Latin American region.
With the incorporation of these four cities, Cathay broadens its destination portfolio in the subcontinent. Currently, the airline already offers connectivity to six key destinations across four Latin American countries through bilateral agreements via transfer hubs in Europe, North America, and Oceania:
- Brazil: Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.
- Mexico: Mexico City and Guadalajara.
- Peru: Lima.
- Chile: Santiago de Chile.

Capacity Increase: Madrid to Operate with Daily Frequencies
To logistically accommodate the increased passenger demand resulting from the new agreement with Iberia, effective October 25, 2026, Cathay will add three additional weekly flights to its non-stop route between Hong Kong and Madrid.
With this capacity increase, the route will upgrade to a daily service (7 flights per week). This consolidates the carrier as the sole airline providing non-stop connectivity between Hong Kong and Spain.
In addition to the daily offering to Madrid, the company maintains its traditional summer seasonal service to Barcelona-El Prat Airport with four weekly frequencies.
“We are delighted to welcome these new destinations in Latin America to our codeshare network. By increasing our Madrid service to daily, we reinforce our position as the only airline offering non-stop connectivity between Hong Kong and Spain. These enhancements underscore our commitment to strengthening connectivity between Asia and markets worldwide, providing passengers with greater choice and convenience, and further elevating Hong Kong’s status as one of the world’s premier international aviation hubs.”
— Lavinia Lau, Chief Customer and Commercial Officer, Cathay Group.
The direct Hong Kong-Madrid route, originally established in 2016, has evolved to become a major strategic business and tourism link between the Asian and Spanish markets.
