Panama: Tocumen Airport Handles Over 11.5 Million Passengers in First Half of 2026
Tocumen International Airport announced on Monday that it handled a total of 11,531,295 passengers during the first six months of 2026, marking a 15% increase compared to the same period in 2025. This growth reinforces Panama’s strategic role as a hub bridging connectivity across Central America, South America, North America, and Europe.
Starting in January of this year, Tocumen’s management incorporated infants under two years old into its official statistical model. With this methodological update, total cumulative traffic for the first half of the year reached 11,606,653 travelers, enhancing the precision of the airport’s operational metrics.
June Operational Performance: Traffic Growth and Transit Passengers
During June 2026, the terminal registered 1,933,318 passenger movements (reaching 1,946,267 when including infants under two).
A breakdown of the month’s traffic highlights Panama’s strength as a regional hub:
- Connecting passengers: 76% of the monthly total were transfer passengers, accounting for 1,467,903 people.
- Disembarking passengers: 236,163 travelers arrived in Panama through the terminal.
- Boarding passengers: 229,252 people originated their journeys from the airport.
- Daily average: Tocumen maintained an average of 64,444 daily passenger movements, with Fridays, Mondays, and Sundays recording the highest traffic peaks.

Flight Operations, Connectivity, and Top Routes
Regarding aircraft movements, Tocumen recorded 89,624 operations between January and June 2026, representing an 11% year-over-year increase (an additional 9,223 flights).
Breakdown by Operational Category:
- Commercial flights: 90% of the cumulative total.
- Cargo operations: 6%.
- General aviation: 3%.
- Other services: 1% (charter flights, technical stops, military operations, and specialized services).
In June, the airport averaged 453 daily aircraft movements. It was served by 14 commercial passenger airlines and 15 cargo carriers, connecting Panama to 94 international destinations and one domestic route.

- Bogotá: 586,019 passengers
- Miami: 467,510 passengers
- Punta Cana: 429,058 passengers
- San José: 424,717 passengers

Air Cargo Sector Growth
Air freight transport continued its upward trajectory during the first half of 2026. The airport handled 128,412 metric tons of cargo, representing a 9% rise compared to the first half of the previous year (an additional 10,771 metric tons).

The performance registered during the first six months of 2026 confirms Tocumen International Airport’s position as the primary gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean, consolidating its infrastructure as an indispensable logistics and aviation hub for the region.
