Lufthansa Group will usher in a new era in its inflight experience on August 19, when its first aircraft equipped with Starlink high-speed satellite connectivity takes to the skies. The rollout will begin on a Lufthansa Airlines Airbus A320neo and will progressively expand across the conglomerate’s entire fleet by 2029, making it the largest airline group in Europe to adopt this technology.
Unlike traditional geostationary systems, Starlink’s infrastructure relies on a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation. This architecture delivers inflight bandwidth and transmission speeds that, in many cases, exceed fixed residential ground connections. Key technical capabilities enabled for passengers during flight include:
- Seamless video content streaming.
- Interactive cloud-based work environments.
- High-speed application performance and large data transfers at cruising altitude.
Program Scope and Group Airlines Involved
The strategic agreement encompasses the gradual retrofitting of approximately 850 aircraft belonging to all of the group’s operating airlines. The company has established a timeline with the goal of completing installation across the entire fleet by 2029.
The ten airlines within the corporate structure currently preparing for system integration are:
- Lufthansa
- Swiss International Air Lines
- Austrian Airlines
- Brussels Airlines
- ITA Airways
- Edelweiss Air
- Discover Airlines
- Air Dolomiti
- Lufthansa City Airlines
- Eurowings

“I am thrilled to announce the launch of the new Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi on board our group’s aircraft. With this, we are making high-speed internet an integral part of the travel experience across all classes and all Lufthansa Group airlines—this is how we define premium. By 2029, all of the group’s approximately 850 aircraft will be equipped with this technology. Our product promise doesn’t end at the seat or the menu; today, connectivity is a fundamental element of a truly extraordinary inflight experience,” stated Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer of Lufthansa Group.
Access Model, Commercialization, and Terms of Use
The new service, marketed under the brand Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi, will be offered completely free of charge to all Miles & More frequent flyer members and registered Travel ID users, featuring universal coverage across all cabin classes (Economy Class, Premium Economy Class, Business Class, and First Class).
The platform is commercially sponsored by Mastercard, extending its strategic partnership with the group after serving as the commercial partner for the previous inflight connectivity solution, FlyNet.
Inflight Digital Etiquette Protocol
To access browsing services, users must accept unified terms and conditions of use. These policies were developed based on customer satisfaction surveys and enforce the following mandatory restrictions:
- Mandatory headphone use: Required for playing any form of audio or video content.
- Prohibition of voice communications: Voice and video calls are strictly prohibited on board.
- Live streaming restriction: Live broadcasting or streaming from the aircraft will not be permitted.
The fleet-wide adoption of the Starlink network is part of Lufthansa Group’s broader investment roadmap focusing on fleet modernization, inflight product upgrades, and technological innovation across the entire travel value chain. Through this standardization, the corporation aims to deliver a seamless, high-fidelity digital experience for all passengers on short-, medium-, and long-haul flights.
