Panama: Tocumen Airport Surpasses 13.7 Million Passengers Through July

Tocumen International Airport, Panama’s primary air hub, processed a total of 13,719,707 passengers between January and July, representing a 15% year-over-year increase compared to the same period last year. This rate of expansion exceeds initial projections and solidifies the airport’s position as a strategic platform for international connectivity.

When including passengers under two years of age in the breakdown, cumulative passenger traffic reaches 13,808,023 travelers, reflecting a 16% surge compared to the previous year. According to airport authorities, this group began to be monitored and formally included in the statistical reporting model starting in January.

For the month of July alone, Tocumen recorded 2,188,412 passengers, a figure that rises to 2,201,370 when accounting for infants. This operational performance reaffirms the terminal’s strategic role as the country’s primary gateway, acting as a crucial air bridge connecting Central America, South America, North America, and Europe, as well as the Caribbean and the rest of Latin America.

Traffic Dynamics: The Dominance of Transfer Passengers

The airport’s operational infrastructure maintains a strong focus on global connections:

  • Connecting Traffic: In July, 75% of total movement corresponded to transit passengers, reaching a total of 1,648,644 transfer travelers.
  • Disembarking Passengers: A total of 277,555 passengers arrived in Panama City through the terminal during July.
  • Boarding Passengers: A total of 262,213 passengers began their itineraries originating from the country during the same period.

In terms of daily intensity, passenger throughput averaged 70,500 daily passenger movements during July, with Sundays, Mondays, and Fridays experiencing the highest concentrations of activity.

Flight Operations and International Route Network

Between January and July, Tocumen International Airport logged 105,770 aircraft movements, representing an 11% increase (or an additional 10,789 operations) compared to the same period last year. In July, the terminal averaged nearly 470 flight operations per day.

Operational Traffic Breakdown (January – July)

  • Commercial Passenger Flights: 90%
  • Cargo Operations: 6%
  • General Aviation: 3%
  • Technical Stops, Charters, Military, and Others: 1%

During July, 14 commercial passenger airlines and 14 cargo carriers operated at the terminal, connecting Panama with 91 international destinations and one domestic route.

Top Connecting Markets (January – July)

The top routes by origin and destination traffic volume were:

  • Bogota: 592,388 passengers
  • Miami: 472,163 passengers
  • San Jose, Costa Rica: 441,642 passengers
  • Punta Cana: 437,600 passengers
  • Medellin: 413,369 passengers

Sustained Growth in Air Cargo

The air freight segment also demonstrated a strong upward trajectory. Between January and July, Tocumen handled 149,987 metric tons of cargo, representing an 8% increase (+11,712 metric tons) compared to the same period last year.

In July alone, the logistics division recorded 21,575 metric tons, marking a 5% growth (+941 metric tons) over the same month in the prior year.

“These results reflect the importance of Tocumen for Panama’s connectivity and for the exchange of people and goods between regional markets and the rest of the world. Sustained traffic growth presents us with the challenge of continuing to strengthen our operational and service capabilities, ensuring the airport can meet the needs of passengers, airlines, and the country’s economic activity,” said Jose Ruiz Blanco, General Manager of Tocumen International Airport.

The strong operational performance displayed during the first seven months reinforces Tocumen’s position as a key infrastructure asset for international trade, tourism, and regional competitiveness.
