Delta Strengthens Transatlantic Network for Summer 2027 with New Routes from Detroit and Boston to Europe
Delta Air Lines has announced a series of transatlantic network additions designed to enhance connectivity to key European markets. The carrier’s strategy includes launching new point-to-point connections, moving up the start dates for seasonal spring flights, and extending operating frequencies into the fall and winter months.
According to Jeff Arinder, the airline’s Vice President of Network Planning – International, travelers are seeking more choices and convenience when planning trips across spring, summer, and fall. By introducing these new flights and extending high-demand seasonal operations, the carrier aims to offer greater scheduling and operational flexibility.
Additionally, the airline will maintain extensive onward connectivity to hundreds of European destinations through its commercial joint ventures and partnerships with Air France, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic.
Boston Adds Direct Flights to Venice, Strengthening Its Hub Status
Beginning May 7, 2027, Delta will launch a direct, four-times-weekly service between Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and Venice Airport (VCE), operating through October 29, 2027.
Boston operations and key figures:
- Capacity to Italy: With this route, the carrier will build to a peak schedule of up to 17 daily departures from the United States, offering more than 30,000 direct weekly seats to Italy. Furthermore, the Boston–Milan service will increase to daily frequencies in 2027.
- Transatlantic Network: Venice will mark the airline’s 13th long-haul destination from Boston during the peak summer season and its 12th in continental Europe. Boston will serve as Delta’s third gateway to Venice, providing one-stop connections to nearly 20 domestic destinations across the U.S.
- Fleet and Cabins: Flights will be operated on widebody Airbus A330-300 aircraft, configured with four cabin experiences: Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+, and Delta Main Cabin.
Detroit Secures New Nonstop Service to Athens
For the first time in the history of Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW), the carrier will offer direct service between Michigan and the Greek capital. The route will commence on June 8, 2027, and run through October 28, 2027, operating three times per week.
Key facts for the Detroit–Athens route:
- Strategic Positioning: Athens will become the airline’s 12th long-haul destination from Detroit during the peak summer period, its seventh in continental Europe, and its fourth U.S. hub with nonstop service to Athens.
- Feeder Traffic: Delta’s Detroit hub will provide convenient onward connections for the Athens service from more than 40 domestic markets.
- Aircraft Deployment: Operations will be flown using Airbus A330-200 aircraft, featuring Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+, and Delta Main Cabin cabins.
Unprecedented Link Between Austin and Paris
These two route additions complement the previously announced daily service between Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) and Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG), slated to begin on March 27, 2027.
The flight will represent the first nonstop route in history connecting Austin and the French capital. Through the transatlantic joint venture with Air France-KLM, the service will provide one-stop connectivity to nearly 70 destinations across Europe, India, and Africa. The route will operate daily throughout the summer season using next-generation Airbus A330-900neo aircraft, configured with all four cabin classes: Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+, and Delta Main Cabin.
Early Starts and Extended Seasons for European Routes in 2027
To capture shoulder-season demand both ahead of summer and into late autumn, Delta will adjust several seasonal schedules:
- Early Starts to Italy: Seasonal flights from Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) and Detroit (DTW) to Rome (FCO) will launch in early March 2027, while the Seattle (SEA)–Rome service will move up to April.
- Early Resumptions from New York: From New York-JFK, service resumptions to Catania (CTA), Porto (OPO), Prague (PRG), and Copenhagen (CPH) will start earlier in the season.
- Other Seasonal Connections: The carrier will also advance start dates for Boston–Barcelona, Seattle–Barcelona, and Atlanta–Edinburgh.
- Frequency Hikes and Year-Round Continuity: Detroit–Rome and New York-JFK–Copenhagen will transition to daily frequencies as soon as operations restart, while the Cincinnati (CVG)–Paris (CDG) service will maintain a three-times-weekly frequency between January and March.
With the addition of these direct routes, Delta Air Lines further cements its international presence across key European markets ahead of the 2027 season.
