Air Canada and United Airlines have announced a significant expansion of their Canada–U.S. network for the summer 2027 season. The expansion introduces new nonstop routes and increased capacity, building on passenger benefits delivered through their Transborder Joint Business Agreement.
Air Canada Network Expansion into the U.S. Market
Starting next summer, Air Canada will launch three new direct routes linking its primary hubs to strategic destinations across the United States:
- Toronto – Louisville: Launches in late April 2027, ramping up to daily service in May.
- Montreal – Indianapolis: Introduces daily nonstop service connecting Montreal to Indianapolis.
- Edmonton – Newark: Adds a four-times-weekly direct link to the New York metropolitan area, providing seamless access to United Airlines’ global network.

United Airlines Adds New Services and Expanded Frequencies
As part of the coordinated summer 2027 rollout, United Airlines will also strengthen its services into Canada with the following operations:
- New seasonal service to St. John’s from its Newark hub.
- New flights from Denver to Ottawa and Quebec City.
- Increased flight frequencies between Washington, D.C., and Quebec City.
- A 65% increase in daily seat capacity on the Denver–Winnipeg route.
Operational Impact of the Transborder Joint Business Agreement
The two carriers have maintained a close partnership since 1996 as founding members of Star Alliance. In 2022, they formalized their Transborder Joint Business Agreement, which has achieved key operational milestones:
- Launch of 20 new transborder routes since 2022.
- Over 4.3 million passengers carried jointly under the framework.
- More than 5 million transborder seats added jointly since the agreement’s inception.
- Network presence across 10 Canadian gateways, supporting nonstop service beyond major hubs to points including Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Ottawa, Quebec City, Regina, St. John’s, and Winnipeg.
- Canadian domestic feed: Approximately two million passengers connecting to or from the U.S. enter Air Canada’s domestic network annually, serving more than 50 communities.
- Fare combinations and schedule integration: Access to over 1,200 travel itineraries with integrated combined fares and coordinated flight schedules designed to enhance operational recovery and itinerary flexibility during irregular operations.
Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President, Chief Commercial Officer, and President of Cargo at Air Canada, noted that the nearly three-decade partnership continues to generate tangible results while expanding direct connectivity to global markets via United’s U.S. network. Patrick Quayle, Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances at United Airlines, underscored the strategic importance of Canada within the carrier’s international network, pointing to consistent operational growth since 2022.
To build upon these operational synergies, Air Canada and United Airlines have agreed to renew and expand their Transborder Joint Business Agreement. Both carriers have formally submitted an application to Transport Canada for regulatory approval of the amended and restated agreement, with implementation subject to standard government and regulatory authorizations.
