Tocumen International Airport consolidated its standing as a strategic regional hub by handling 17,818,114 passengers between January and September 2026, marking a 15% year-over-year increase. This performance reaffirms the Panamanian gateway’s role as one of the primary points of entry and key airline connecting hubs across Latin America and the Caribbean.

When factoring in infants under the age of two, cumulative passenger volume reached 17,925,175. This demographic began being formally monitored and tracked in the airport’s statistical reports in January 2026, expanding the scope and precision of its passenger throughput tracking.

The airport’s geographic location and route network continue to drive connectivity among Central America, South America, North America, and Europe, boosting tourism and strengthening Panama’s competitive edge as a commercial trade and business hub.

September Operational Summary

In September 2026, the terminal logged 1,962,628 passenger movements (1,971,519 including infants under two). The monthly traffic breakdown highlighted a heavy focus on international connecting flights:

  • Transfer/Transit Passengers: Totaled 1,518,595 travelers, representing 77% of total monthly traffic and cementing Tocumen’s role as a connecting mega-hub for international destinations.
  • Origin & Destination (O&D) / Boarding and Deplaning Traffic: Recorded 223,540 departing (embarked) passengers and 220,493 arriving (disembarked) passengers.

Addressing these performance indicators, Jose Ruiz Blanco, General Manager of Tocumen International Airport, noted:

“The sustained growth in passenger traffic underscores Tocumen’s strategic role in regional and international air connectivity. Our commitment remains focused on bolstering airport operations and contributing to Panama’s tourism growth, competitiveness, and global presence by delivering infrastructure that effectively aligns with the demands of both travelers and airlines.”

Growth in Aircraft Movements and Global Connectivity

Between January and September 2026, Tocumen International Airport’s two active runways logged 136,593 aircraft movements (takeoffs and landings), representing an 11% increase (an additional 13,775 flight operations) compared to the same period in 2025.

Year-to-date aircraft movements were divided across the following operational segments:

  • Commercial Passenger Flights: Accounted for 90% of total flight activity.
  • Cargo Operations: Represented 6% of total flights.
  • General Aviation: Made up 3% of operational volume.
  • Other Operations: The remaining 1% comprised technical stops, charter flights, and military operations.

In September, daily aircraft operations averaged approximately 499 movements. During that month, 14 scheduled passenger carriers and 16 dedicated cargo airlines operated at the facility, providing direct scheduled service to 92 international destinations and one domestic route.

Top Origin and Destination Markets

During the first nine months of 2026, the highest-volume routes to and from Tocumen were:

  • Bogota, Colombia: 893,293 passengers.
  • Miami, United States: 707,764 passengers.
  • Punta Cana, Dominican Republic: 658,489 passengers.
  • San Jose, Costa Rica: 650,725 passengers.
  • Medellin, Colombia: 622,450 passengers.

Upward Momentum in Air Cargo Handling

Air freight traffic also maintained a positive trajectory through the first nine months of 2026, totaling 194,040 metric tons—an 8% expansion compared to the same period in 2025 (up by 14,008 metric tons).

Focusing strictly on September, the cargo terminal processed 22,714 metric tons, achieving a 9% year-over-year increase with 1,915 more metric tons than in September 2025, further reinforcing the airport’s logistical footprint in regional and worldwide supply chains.

Tocumen International Airport’s solid metrics across passenger numbers, aircraft movements, and freight throughput affirm its status as a critical asset for Panama’s economy, supporting incoming tourism, corporate business travel, and cross-border commerce. In a regional landscape marked by intensifying competition among airline connecting hubs, operational efficiency, network breadth, and the capacity to absorb growing air travel demand will remain decisive factors in sustaining Panama’s strategic market leadership across Latin America and the Caribbean.
