Avianca to Operate Barcelona–Abu Dhabi Route for Etihad Airways Under Wet-Lease Agreement

In a key strategic move for intercontinental connectivity, Avianca will begin operating the route between Barcelona and Abu Dhabi under a wet-lease arrangement for Etihad Airways. The agreement marks the Colombian carrier’s historic debut in the United Arab Emirates market and represents the first operational milestone emerging from the alliance forged by Abra Group.

Operational Deployment and ACMI Framework

Scheduled service between the Spanish city and the Emirati capital will run for a full one-year term, spanning from October 25, 2026, to October 25, 2027.

The operation will be conducted under a comprehensive Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance (ACMI) contract, standardly known across the commercial aviation industry as a wet lease. Under this operational framework:

Fruits of the Abra Group and Etihad Airways Partnership

The Barcelona–Abu Dhabi deployment is among the initial tangible outcomes of the strategic alliance announced on July 21 at the Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom. The framework was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at bolstering traffic feeds and global network connectivity between Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia by linking Etihad and Avianca’s respective route maps.

The launch of these flights demonstrates how Abra Group’s corporate platform leverages complementary airline capacity across its portfolio to accelerate partner expansion and capture high-yield demand across critical international corridors.
