Iberia premiered this weekend its new route to Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland, and has become the first airline to operate direct scheduled flights from Madrid to Santa Claus’ official hometown.
The route was inaugurated this Saturday with a full house: 183 passengers.
The inaugural flight featured many surprises for customers, such as reindeer-shaped cookies and Santa Claus stickers and letters for the little ones. In addition, cabin crew members wore jingle bells on their badges identifying them as Santa’s helpers.
The most special moment was on arrival at Rovaniemi airport, when the passengers received a visit from Santa Claus. The little ones were able to hand-deliver the letters they had written on the plane.

Visit Santa Claus’ official hometown
Since 2010, Rovaniemi is officially Santa Claus’ hometown and, of course, it is possible to visit the most famous inhabitant of the area every day of the year in Santa Claus Village, located in the Arctic Circle. The village is home to activities, stores, restaurants and cafes. Visitors can enjoy husky and reindeer sleigh rides, snowmobile tours, and visit ice constructions. According to Rovaniemi airport traffic data, Spain ranked fourth among European countries in terms of the number of visitors, behind only the United Kingdom, France and Germany.
Santa Claus Village is Lapland’s best-known attraction and tourist spot par excellence, but it is not the only one. Every year, Rovaniemi attracts more than 500,000 travelers from all corners of the world thanks to its various attractions that, in addition to visiting Santa Claus, range from winter sports to aurora borealis.
