American Airlines is rolling out a new version of its mobile app, featuring a redesign that promises to further enhance the customer experience.
An Update Based on What Passengers Value Most
Starting in May, American Airlines travelers will notice a significant change in the mobile app. The airline has completely revamped the app, incorporating the most requested features from its customers. This update not only refreshes the aesthetics and navigation but also lays the groundwork for future improvements and new features that will continue to elevate the user experience.
Heather Garboden, American Airlines’ Director of Customer Care, explained that over the past year, the team focused on gathering passenger feedback to identify their key needs and expectations. “Our goal is to provide tools that simplify travel, and in that process, the app is our top priority,” Garboden noted.

The redesign goes beyond surface-level changes. American Airlines has integrated key improvements that directly address user preferences:

- Dedicated AAdvantage member section, detailing accumulated miles, elite status level, and more.
- Summary of all trips, both near-term and future, with quick access to flight status and details.
- Intuitive navigation, designed with an interface similar to other popular apps.
- Inspiration for future destinations and ways to connect with airline partners.
- Live Activities on iOS, displaying real-time flight updates directly on the lock screen.
Enhanced Mobile Control: Features That Remain
In addition to the new tools, the app retains essential functionalities already valued by users:
- Check-in, seat selection, and baggage management.
- Digital boarding pass, compatible with Apple Wallet.
- Flight details on Apple Watch.
- Direct chat with American Airlines agents.
- Access to airport maps and step-by-step directions.
- Estimated drive time to the airport.
- Free in-flight entertainment via the app.
- Flight rebooking in case of disruptions.
- Request for special services, such as wheelchairs.
- Security wait times for DFW, LGA, JFK, PHX, and LHR.
- Siri Shortcuts for quick access to key travel information.
This redesign marks a new chapter in American Airlines’ digital strategy. By combining personalization, accessibility, and a more user-friendly interface, the airline aims to make every mobile interaction as efficient and seamless as the flight itself.
