The investment fund Indigo Partners, the parent group of JetSMART, Wizz Air, Volaris, Frontier, and Cebu Pacific, announced on Tuesday the signing of a strategic agreement to equip its airlines’ fleets with Starlink’s high-speed connectivity technology, transforming the inflight digital experience starting in 2027.

The strategic agreement entails the progressive installation of satellite terminals on more than 1,000 aircraft. The system will operate seamlessly from takeoff to landing, regardless of the geographical route or the aircraft’s final destination.

“With the addition of Starlink, our portfolio airlines will be able to offer reliable, high-speed inflight connectivity, elevating the travel experience for Wizz, Frontier, Volaris, JetSMART, and Cebu Pacific passengers.”
— Bill Franke, Managing Partner of Indigo Partners.

The satellite system will substantially alter the cabin’s digital experience, allowing travelers to access high-definition streaming platforms, low-latency online gaming, remote work file transfers, social media browsing, and instant messaging applications exactly as they would at home or in the office.

Optimizing Aviation Efficiency

Beyond passenger entertainment, the technological infrastructure will provide real-time connectivity across all phases of flight operations. This will directly benefit pilots, cabin crew, aircraft maintenance teams, and ground support staff.

The primary operational benefits identified include:

  • Real-time connectivity: Continuous data link between the aircraft in flight and the operations control center (OCC).
  • Predictive maintenance: Transmission and downloading of live aircraft health and telemetry data to preemptively address mechanical issues.
  • Irregular operations (IROP) management: Ability to provide optimized customer service and faster responses in the event of diversions or irregular operations.
  • Connected crews: Permanent access to digital management tools for cabin and flight crews during flight.

Indigo Partners’ adoption of Starlink represents a paradigm shift for the ultra-low-cost carrier model, proving that low fares are no barrier to high-tech cabin modernization.
