Strategic Partnership Expansion Between Icelandair and Southwest Airlines
Parallel to adding St. Louis as a new North American destination, Icelandair announced the expansion of its partnership with Southwest Airlines.

Southwest is the leading carrier in St. Louis, where it operates one of its primary crew bases and connecting hubs. This strategic expansion will:
- Offer passengers on both airlines more seamless connections from multiple North American points via St. Louis to Iceland and onwards to Icelandair’s European destinations.
- Provide travelers arriving from Iceland convenient connecting itineraries through St. Louis to a wide array of U.S. destinations, with a strong focus on Texas and neighboring states.
Tomas Ingason, Chief Commercial Officer at Icelandair, underscored the significance of these network additions ahead of a major milestone for the airline:
“We are very pleased to add St. Louis and Madrid to our network next summer. St. Louis is an exciting addition, further strengthened by our growing partnership with Southwest Airlines, which will create convenient connections between North American destinations, Iceland, and Europe. Madrid is a popular destination that we are thrilled to welcome back to our network. As we prepare to celebrate our 90th anniversary next June, there is no better way to mark the milestone than by welcoming new cities into our network. These additions support the continued growth of our route network and expand the range of travel options available to our customers.”
The expansion into Madrid and St. Louis not only diversifies Icelandair’s transatlantic network ahead of the summer 2027 season and its 90th anniversary, but also reinforces a feed-and-deplane connectivity model anchored by Southwest Airlines’ domestic network—streamlining passenger flows between North America and Europe via its Keflavik hub.
