WestJet and Icelandair Deepen Alliance with Reciprocal Codeshare Agreement
At the 2026 International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting, WestJet and Icelandair signed a reciprocal codeshare agreement. This strategic alliance aims to offer passengers of both airlines enhanced transatlantic connectivity, simplifying travel between Canada, Iceland, and continental Europe through an integrated travel experience.
Streamlined Transatlantic Connectivity on a Single Ticket
The new agreement will allow travelers to access a significantly broader destination network through single-ticket issuance, a unified booking process, and the benefit of through-checked baggage to their final destination.
For passengers of the Canadian carrier, the cooperation opens doors to more than 10 destinations within Europe. This will be achieved via optimized connections at Keflavík International Airport, the Icelandic airline’s primary hub. It is worth noting that the full implementation of these codeshare routes is currently pending regulatory approval.

Route Expansion and Bilateral Benefits
The announcement coincides with the physical expansion of the Canadian airline’s route network to Iceland scheduled for this month. The operational deployment of the alliance will be structured as follows:
- New Direct Routes: WestJet will launch nonstop operations to Keflavík from the cities of Edmonton and Winnipeg.
- Seasonal Routes: Due to high market demand, summer seasonal flights between Calgary and Keflavík will be reactivated for the 2026 travel season.
- Codeshare Support: These direct services will be backed by Icelandair’s network, facilitating onward travel connectivity to various points in Central Europe.
Conversely, the benefit is bidirectional. Passengers originating in Iceland and the European continent will enjoy easier access to the Canadian market, enabling them to connect with a single stopover to multiple destinations across WestJet’s domestic network.
Executive Insights: A Strategic Move for Both Carriers
For Icelandair, this agreement represents a particular milestone, making WestJet its first codeshare partner in Canada. Bogi Nils Bogason, President and CEO of Icelandair, emphasized that the collaboration streamlines combined itineraries and provides greater flexibility for their customers.
Meanwhile, John Weatherill, Executive Vice-President and Chief Commercial Officer at WestJet, noted that strengthening this long-term relationship represents a key step forward in expanding connectivity options for Canadian citizens, delivering greater value and convenience to the passenger experience.
The full activation of the integrated itineraries under this codeshare will be executed as soon as the relevant regulatory authorities grant the necessary approvals. In the meantime, the launch of the new direct routes from Edmonton and Winnipeg, combined with the return of the Calgary service, will mark the operational starting point for this renewed transatlantic cooperation during the current 2026 summer season.
