Unionized employees of Mexican airline Interjet will begin a strike this Friday after weeks of flight cancellations as the company struggles to maintain operations in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Section 15 workers union reported in a statement that a majority of employees voted to strike at the company’s Mexico City facility to recover some wages and benefits through the union, Reuters reported.
Airline employees are owed four months’ salary and other payments, including Christmas bonuses and contributions to the 2020 savings fund, the union said.

“The current situation of our company is unfortunate. We see that there are no planes to fly and no real business plan to continue operations. No one can blame the employees for that, hopefully the closure will be temporary. We deeply regret the failure that this result represents for Mexican aviation, just after the company turned 15 years old,” added the union.
Like many airlines, Interjet has been severely disrupted by the pandemic. All of the airline’s flights have been cancelled and operations suspended since last month.
