Strengthening air connectivity as a driver of development is a priority objective for Aeropuertos Uruguay. The company, which is part of the Corporación América Airports (CAAP) group, plans to invest more than US$ 45 million in refurbishment, operation and maintenance of the Carmelo air terminal during the term of the concession.
The modernization works at Carmelo Airport include the construction of a new terminal area equipped with all the amenities and technology to operate international flights, the paving of the main runway 17-35 of 1080 meters, the construction of taxiways and apron for aircraft, the LED beaconing of runway, taxiway and apron, and the construction of a new perimeter fence.
In addition, the works, which are expected to be completed by the end of the year, include the installation of approach lights, which will enhance operational safety and expand the range of conditions in which it can operate, the construction of detachments for the National Air Police and Fire Department, as well as the construction of a new automatic weather station.

The objective of the works is to have a first class airport that complies with the highest operational safety standards, in line with the regulations of the International Civil Aviation Organization.
During the ceremony, the company’s authorities presented the airport remodeling project, after defining, together with the authorities of the National Directorate of Civil Aviation and Aeronautical Infrastructure (Dinacia), the specific needs of the terminal, as well as the deadlines and work schedules.
“Aeropuertos Uruguay is proud to lay the foundation stone of the new Carmelo International Airport, which not only marks the beginning of the works, but also symbolizes the start of this important project for the development of a National System of International Airports. Our commitment to Uruguay deepens day by day,” said Diego Arrosa, CEO of Aeropuertos Uruguay.
During his presentation, Arrosa highlighted the company’s commitment to developing sustainable aviation projects, focused on the development of an electric aircraft industry with the objectives of further reducing the carbon footprint and strengthening sustainable and environmentally friendly growth.
The development of the airports that are part of Aeropuertos Uruguay will not only enhance Uruguay’s air connectivity, but will also be a driver of economic, tourism and logistics development for the communities and departments in which they are located.
