Dozens of demonstrators entered this Monday morning the Alfredo Rodríguez Ballón International Airport in the city of Arequipa and “destroyed the security infrastructure and set fire to the control booth”, according to a statement issued by Aeropuertos Andinos de Perú. Due to the events that occurred, authorities evacuated all the people who were in the air terminal and the airport was closed.
“Aeropuertos Andinos del Perú urges the population in general to cease violence and to respect the rights of citizens and free transit, and we demand the control of everyone’s safety by our authorities,” they detailed in the statement.

They also indicated that they are coordinating with the airlines and the airport community “to resume operations in the short term and when there are conditions that guarantee the safety of passengers, equipment and the entire airport community”.
The demonstrators demand the closing of the Congress and an early election after Pedro Castillo’s vacancy, and some sectors are also asking for the release of the former president, according to local media reports.
The takeover of the airport by protesters sparked a clash with security forces, where at least four people have been reported injured.
