Virgin Australia announced Friday that it has ordered another six Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, bringing its backlog for the MAX Family to 39 aircraft: 14 737-8s and 25 737-10s.

On Friday afternoon, the airline took delivery of its third 737 MAX 8, named Bronte Beach”, at Brisbane Airport from the United States.

Virgin Australia clocks first profit in 11 years

The remaining 11 MAX 8s are expected to arrive throughout 2024, which equates to the delivery of a new aircraft almost every month. Deliveries of the MAX 10 are scheduled to begin in late 2025.

Work will begin in the next few days on the $110 million interior refurbishment and product upgrades of the airline’s 737s. The first refurbished aircraft is scheduled to leave the maintenance shop in Melbourne in early December, and the project will be completed over the next 18-24 months.

“Demand for travel remains high and we continue to grow and renew our fleet, allowing us to offer great value and choice in the marketplace,” said Virgin Australia’s Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer, Alistair Hartley.
