airBaltic and Starlink: A Step Towards the Future of European Aviation Connectivity
Latvian airline airBaltic has taken a major step towards the future of air travel by successfully completing a test flight to certify the use of Starlink high-speed internet, developed by SpaceX. This milestone positions airBaltic as the first airline in the region to offer this groundbreaking technology free of charge to its passengers.
A Game-Changing Test Flight
The flight, conducted from airBaltic’s main base in Riga, Latvia, aboard an Airbus A220-300, evaluated the functionality of the Starlink aero terminal and the quality of the internet connection. This trial is part of the process to obtain the required certification from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

Starlink: Innovation Redefining the Skies
Developed by SpaceX, Starlink is the world’s first and largest satellite constellation in low Earth orbit. Its unique architecture allows speeds of up to 500 Mbps with exceptionally low latency, thanks to satellites positioned up to 65 times closer to Earth than traditional geostationary satellites.

This connectivity will enable passengers to engage in activities previously unimaginable during flights, such as online gaming, using virtual private networks (VPNs), and other high-bandwidth tasks. Moreover, the experience will be completely intuitive: passengers will have access to the internet without complicated setups or additional logins.
A Fully Connected Future
airBaltic plans to equip its entire Airbus A220-300 fleet with Starlink by the first quarter of 2025. With one of the most modern fleets in Europe, this step is a natural evolution toward providing a more innovative and competitive customer service.
