Boeing has taken a significant step toward more sustainable aviation by becoming a key partner of Norsk e-Fuel, a pioneering project aimed at accelerating the industrial-scale production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in Europe. This strategic move reinforces Boeing’s and the aviation industry’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, a goal shared by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and its member states.
The Innovation Behind e-SAF
Norsk e-Fuel focuses on producing e-SAF, a fuel derived through the innovative Power-to-Liquids (PtL) process. This process combines green hydrogen generated using fossil-free energy with CO₂ recycled from biogenic sources. The result is a fuel capable of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional jet fuel.
Steve Gillard, Boeing’s regional sustainability director for Europe, the Middle East, Türkiye, Africa, and Central Asia, highlighted the importance of this development: “Our support of and collaboration with Norsk e-Fuel underscores the importance of using fossil-free energy to accelerate SAF production, which is key to reducing aviation’s carbon emissions towards 2050.”
Ambitious Targets for SAF Production
Currently, SAF accounts for only 0.53% of global commercial fuel usage. In Europe, the RefuelEU SAF initiative aims to gradually increase this proportion, targeting 6% by 2030 and an impressive 70% by 2050. Specific sub-targets for e-SAF include an increase from 1.2% in 2030 to 35% in 2050.

Boeing’s efforts not only contribute to these goals but also strengthen energy security in Nordic countries and encourage policies that ensure the global SAF sector’s economic viability.
“Our goal is to make e-fuels competitive with and eventually replace fossil fuels in critical infrastructures. Boeing accelerates our capacity to meet this transition”, Lars Bjørn Larsen, Chief Commercial Officer of Norsk e-Fuel, said.
Strategic Collaboration: A Comprehensive Approach
The partnership between Boeing and Norsk e-Fuel combines Boeing’s expertise in the SAF industry with Norsk e-Fuel’s technological knowledge and network of partners, including Norway’s largest airline, Norwegian.
“Boeing’s investment marks a significant milestone for Norsk e-Fuel and reinforces the positive development of our industry. This support also emphasizes the need for a regulatory environment that facilitates the potential of e-fuels production in Norway”, Geir Karlsen, CEO of Norwegian, said.
The Future of Sustainable Aviation
Boeing’s investment in Norsk e-Fuel represents a crucial step forward for sustainable aviation, with benefits that go beyond emissions reduction. This partnership not only fosters a robust SAF ecosystem but also lays the groundwork for a more competitive and environmentally responsible aviation sector in the years to come.
With efforts like these, the aviation industry demonstrates that innovation and sustainability can soar together toward a cleaner and more promising future.
