Finnair announced on Wednesday the cancellation of approximately 70 flights this Thursday due to a strike organized by the Finnish Aviation Union (IAU) and the Finnish Transport Workers’ Union (AKT). The protest, which is political in nature, will take place between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM, affecting various services at Helsinki Airport, including customer service, baggage handling, and other ground operations.

6,500 Passengers Affected

The cancellations will impact around 6,500 passengers, who will need to adjust their travel plans. The airline has committed to offering alternative routes to affected customers. “The effects of this strike on our customers are unacceptable; we will do everything possible to provide each passenger with a suitable alternative route,” stated Jaakko Schildt, Chief Operating Officer of Finnair.

Passenger options

Customers with canceled flights will receive a notification followed by information about their new route. This information will be available in Finnair’s “Manage Booking” service and its mobile app. Passengers can accept the change, modify it through customer service, or, if preferred, cancel their reservation and request a refund for the unused ticket.

Recommendations for Travelers

Due to potential disruptions in services and baggage handling at Helsinki Airport, Finnair recommends that passengers traveling on March 27 check in early, arrive at the airport on time, and carry essential items, such as medications, in their hand luggage.

“We deeply regret the inconvenience and changes to our customers’ travel plans caused by this situation. We ask for their patience and will do everything possible to ensure they can complete their journeys,” Schildt added.
