Embraer has reached an agreement with Intelsat to install its high-speed in-flight connectivity system on the E-Jet E2 during aircraft production. This decision marks a key advancement in enhancing the passenger experience, with transmission speeds of up to 275 Mbps, enabling seamless browsing, working, or streaming content with performance comparable to a home network.
Intelsat’s solution is the first of its kind: a multi-orbit satellite system featuring an Electronically Steered Array (ESA) antenna, delivering broader coverage, faster speeds, and a more stable connection. It will be available as a factory-installed option by the end of the year.
Connectivity from the First Commercial Flight
Rob Baird, Intelsat’s OEM Programs Director, stated, “Intelsat is the first multi-orbit in-flight connectivity system with an ESA antenna to be installed at Embraer’s factory, allowing passengers to access reliable, uninterrupted connectivity as soon as the aircraft enters commercial service.”

This direct production-line installation means airlines can offer high-speed WiFi without post-delivery modifications. Martyn Holmes, Embraer Commercial Aviation’s Chief Commercial Officer, summarized it as follows: “The factory installation of Intelsat’s ESA is a clear example of how we enable our customers to enhance the passenger experience from day one.”
Technology Combining Performance, Global Coverage, and Efficiency
Intelsat’s system leverages both Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Geostationary Orbit (GEO) satellite networks. The low-latency LEO network ensures faster, more stable connections, even in remote and polar regions, while the GEO network excels in densely populated areas like major cities, providing continuous and reliable coverage.
Additionally, the ESA antenna features a lightweight, low-profile design (under 3 inches in height), reducing drag. This contributes to lower fuel consumption, aligning with the sustainability goals of Embraer’s E2 family.
Headquartered in McLean, USA, Intelsat operates the world’s largest integrated satellite and terrestrial network. As a leading global provider of in-flight connectivity services, its partnership with Embraer not only strengthens its presence in commercial aviation but also sets a new standard for connectivity in regional aircraft.
