Avianca has announced its relocation to the new Terminal 6 (T6) at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) starting in 2026. With this decision, the airline becomes the first Latin American carrier to choose this state-of-the-art terminal as its operational base, joining a select group of international airlines that will call this cutting-edge facility home.
A Strategic Step in JFK’s Transformation
The new Terminal 6 is part of the ambitious modernization plan for JFK led by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. This $19 billion project aims to completely transform the airport with two new terminals, the expansion and renovation of two others, a ground transportation center, and a streamlined road network.
JFK Millennium Partners (JMP), the consortium responsible for building and operating T6, will host Avianca alongside other renowned airlines such as JetBlue, Lufthansa, Air Canada, Cathay Pacific, SWISS, and Aer Lingus.

What the New Terminal 6 Offers
Avianca passengers will enjoy an experience designed under the “digital-first” concept, aimed at optimizing every step of their journey:
- An average walking time of less than five minutes from TSA security checkpoints to any boarding gate.
- Self-service kiosks with biometric technology for baggage drop.
- Over 9,000 square meters dedicated to retail stores, restaurants, VIP lounges, and spaces inspired by New York.
- Curated public art and a sustainability-focused approach throughout the terminal’s operations.
Steve Thody, CEO of JFK Millennium Partners, stated: “We are thrilled to welcome Avianca as our fourteenth airline at T6 and the first from South America. We share their commitment to accessibility and a world-class travel experience.”
Operational Continuity Until 2026
Until the opening of T6 in 2026, Avianca will continue its regular operations at Terminal 4. Currently, the airline offers up to 10 daily direct flights from JFK to over six destinations in Central and South America, using Airbus A320 aircraft.
This terminal change will enable the airline to enhance its connectivity to nearly all Latin American countries, thanks to its operational hubs in Bogotá and El Salvador.
