Air Algérie, the national airline of Algeria, has taken a significant step in its expansion and sustainability strategy with the acquisition of 16 new ATR 72-600 aircraft. This agreement, the largest ever made by an African airline with ATR, not only marks an advancement in the airline’s fleet but also underscores the importance of regional connectivity on the African continent.
The delivery of these new aircraft is scheduled between 2026 and 2028.
A Commitment of Over 20 Years with ATR
Since 2003, Air Algérie has relied on ATR to strengthen its regional fleet. Over the years, the airline has integrated ATR 72-500 and ATR 72-600 aircraft, with the latter being the most recent additions to its fleet. The acquisition of these 16 new ATR 72-600s will increase the airline’s fleet size and reinforce its goal of reducing its carbon footprint and improving operational efficiency.
The new aircraft will be equipped with state-of-the-art PW127XT engines, ensuring greater fuel efficiency, which is key for short-haul and low-density flights, ideal for Algeria’s regional routes. These aircraft, with a capacity for 72 passengers, will primarily be used to enhance connectivity between different regions of the country, particularly in the southern areas, where air transport is vital for economic and social development.

A First-of-its-Kind Flight Simulator in Africa
One of the standout features of this agreement is the inclusion of the first ATR 72-600 flight simulator in Africa, which will be installed at Air Algérie’s training center. This will enhance pilot training and raise the airline’s operational safety standards.
Hamza Benhamouda, CEO of Air Algérie, stated: “The ATR 72-600 is the right aircraft to help us connect all regions of our country and support national development through efficient and reliable air transport. Its performance on short-haul routes with low passenger density makes it an essential component of our strategy.”
Nathalie Tarnaud Laude, CEO of ATR, commented: “This order is a strong endorsement of the ATR 72-600’s capabilities and the value it brings to fostering regional connectivity. With exceptionally low operating costs and the ability to perform reliably in diverse environments, the ATR 72-600 is the perfect aircraft for low-density and remote routes.”
Boosting African Regional Aviation
This agreement also has an impact beyond Air Algérie. It represents the largest order ever placed by an African airline with ATR in the company’s history. This milestone reflects the growth of regional aviation in Africa and the increasing demand for efficient and accessible aircraft to connect regions across the continent.
