Garuda Indonesia is in discussions to acquire between 50 and 75 Boeing aircraft as part of its strategy to strengthen its international network. The airline, which has faced significant financial challenges in recent years, is focused on renewing and expanding its fleet to compete in an increasingly demanding global market.
Key Details of the Purchase
According to Wamildan Tsani Panjaitan, CEO of Garuda, the airline is negotiating to add Boeing 737 Max 8 and Boeing 787-9 models to its fleet. While a clear timeline for finalizing the transaction has not been set, this purchase marks a critical step in Garuda’s recovery. In 2024, the airline reported a net loss. Panjaitan emphasized that discussions with Boeing are ongoing but did not specify whether this acquisition would be part of a broader agreement under anticipated commercial and investment deals between Indonesia and the United States.
A Pivotal Moment for Garuda
Panjaitan’s appointment as CEO in November of last year marked a turning point for Garuda. The company, which also operates the low-cost carrier Citilink, secured a $405 million loan from the sovereign wealth fund Danantara. This funding aims to expand the airline’s fleet, with a goal of operating 120 aircraft within the next five years. Currently, Garuda and Citilink have a combined fleet of 139 planes.

The Boeing 737 Max’s Image Recovery
One of the most debated aspects of this potential purchase is the reintroduction of the Boeing 737 Max 8 to Garuda’s fleet. This aircraft was at the center of controversy following the tragic crashes of Lion Air in 2018 and Ethiopian Airlines in 2019, which resulted in hundreds of fatalities. In the aftermath, the 737 Max was globally grounded for nearly two years until Boeing implemented modifications to its flight control system.
In 2017, Garuda had received its first Boeing 737 Max 8, but the airline returned the aircraft to its lessor during a $10 billion debt restructuring. Garuda had also attempted to cancel its order for 49 Max 8 aircraft, but in recent months, it has reevaluated this decision and is considering reintroducing the model.
What This Means for Garuda’s Future
The acquisition of new aircraft is a cornerstone of Garuda Indonesia’s transformation. By renewing and expanding its fleet, the airline aims to improve operational efficiency, enhance passenger experiences, and ensure long-term financial sustainability. Additionally, this investment underscores Indonesia’s commitment to advancing its aviation industry, creating jobs, and boosting tourism.
Under Panjaitan’s leadership, Garuda appears to be on a path toward stability, though challenges in the global aviation industry persist. Nevertheless, its renewed focus on fleet modernization and international network expansion demonstrates the airline’s willingness to adapt to market demands and restore its prestige.
