Southwest Airlines projects that the Boeing 737 MAX 7 will obtain its certification around August 2026, a key step for the model to enter into service during the first quarter of 2027, as confirmed by CEO Bob Jordan in statements to Reuters during a Wings Club event in New York.
A More Precise Target for the MAX 7 Program
Jordan explained that Boeing places the process “in the middle of next summer,” and that his personal estimate places regulatory approval “perhaps in August 2026.”
The executive had previously indicated to analysts that he expected certification in the first half of 2026, with the possibility of the aircraft beginning operations towards the end of that year. However, the MAX 7 is not included in Southwest’s fleet planning for 2026, despite the airline being the launch customer for the model.

A Schedule Conditioned by Boeing’s Delays
Boeing is progressing with increasing production of the MAX family, though approvals for the MAX 7 and MAX 10 remain pending due to an issue related to the engine anti-ice system. The manufacturer is also facing delays in the certification of the 777X, its newest wide-body aircraft.
Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg has indicated to analysts that he expects certification for both the MAX 7 and the MAX 10 during 2026, without offering more specific dates. The company points to those statements as its official reference.
FAA’s Role in the Next Steps
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has stated that it plans to propose changes to streamline the certification of new commercial aircraft, an adjustment that could influence the progress of Boeing’s pending programs.
