Iberia Strengthens Commitment to Brazil: 18% Capacity Increase for Winter Season 2026/2027
Iberia has scheduled an 18% growth in its seat offering to Brazil for the upcoming winter season. This strategic expansion is backed by the success of its new routes in Northeast Brazil, operated with the innovative Airbus A321XLR.
A Strengthened Air Bridge Between Brazil and Europe
The Spanish flag carrier has defined its strategy for the 26/27 winter season, projecting a significant increase in its total capacity to connect the South American country with the European continent. Between late October and March, the airline will offer a total of 322,000 seats.
This growth is primarily driven by the performance and capacity expansion of the company’s two newest routes in the country: Recife and Fortaleza. Both connections, inaugurated between December and January, will contribute 29,000 and 26,000 seats respectively during the winter months.

Exponential Growth in the Northeast: Recife and Fortaleza
Connectivity from Northeast Brazil will see a quantitative leap thanks to the planned increase in frequencies:
- Recife: The route will transition from the current 3 weekly frequencies to an operation of between 5 and 7 flights per week. This will allow the city to have a direct daily flight to Madrid during a large part of the season. Capacity growth on this route reaches 190% compared to the previous year.
- Fortaleza: This connection will also see its operations reinforced, moving from 3 to either 4 or 5 weekly frequencies. In this case, the increase in seat supply stands at 161% compared to the same period of the previous year.
Operational Efficiency with the Airbus A321XLR
The technical pillar of this expansion is the Airbus A321XLR, the most modern aircraft on the market today. This narrow-body model stands out for its ability to cover long distances, enabling transatlantic routes to be operated with superior efficiency.
The aircraft features a 182-seat configuration, distributed across Business and Economy cabins, ensuring the airline’s long-haul service standards are maintained.
Network Consolidation and Short-Term Reinforcements
The increases in the Northeast complement the solid presence Iberia already maintains in Brazil’s major urban hubs:
- Sao Paulo: Continues with its double-daily flight operation.
- Rio de Janeiro: Currently maintains an offering of 5 weekly frequencies.
Reflecting the strong commercial reception of the new routes, the airline has decided to move forward part of the capacity reinforcement to May. During that month, both Recife and Fortaleza will benefit from an additional frequency, operating a total of 4 weekly flights each, thereby improving immediate connectivity for customers traveling to Europe.
