Jetstar Overhauls Carry-On Baggage Policy: Introduces Overhead Bin Fees and Eliminates 7 kg Weight Limit Starting in 2027
In a major restructuring of its operational and ancillary revenue policies, low-cost carrier Jetstar has announced a sweeping overhaul of its carry-on baggage regulations. Beginning in February 2027, the airline will charge passengers up to $52 to use the overhead lockers, while simultaneously removing its strict 7-kilogram gate weight limit in favor of a model focused exclusively on bag dimensions.
The shift brings the Qantas Group subsidiary in line with operational standards used by low-cost carriers globally.
Operational Rationale: Streamlining Boarding and Reducing Passenger Stress
Jetstar stated that the policy change follows extensive research and feedback from both passengers and cabin crew. Both groups highlighted gate weigh-ins and overhead bin congestion as two of the most stress-inducing parts of the airport experience.
Jetstar CEO Stephanie Tully outlined the reasoning behind the new scheme:
“We know that weighing carry-on bags at the gate can be frustrating for our customers and our crew. From February, the main thing customers will need to think about is the size of their carry-on luggage.”
Tully added that the overhaul aims to safeguard the airline’s low-fare model while driving improved on-time performance (OTP):
“By offering customers a small under-seat bag with the option to add ‘Priority Carry-on’, we can make better use of overhead bin space, speed up the boarding process, and help ensure more flights depart on time. Our new carry-on model offers customers greater flexibility while keeping our fares low. You only pay for what you need—travelling light means paying less, and you can always add extra capacity if you need it.”
How the New Scheme Works: ‘Priority Carry-on’ and Bag Dimensions
Once the regulations take effect, the policy will operate as follows:
- Standard Allowance Included: All bookings will include one small under-seat item (such as a backpack, handbag, or laptop bag) free of charge, with maximum dimensions of 40 × 30 × 20 cm.
- ‘Priority Carry-on’ Option: Passengers wishing to bring a larger carry-on bag for the overhead locker (up to 56 × 36 × 23 cm) must pay a dedicated fee. This option also includes priority boarding privileges.
- Passengers Traveling with Infants: Passengers traveling with infants will retain the right to bring an additional under-seat item for baby supplies at no extra cost.

Weight Checks and Checked Baggage Allowances
While Jetstar will no longer routinely weigh bags at the gate, the carrier will ask passengers to keep overhead carry-on items under a 10 kg limit so that travelers can safely lift and stow their own bags.
Regarding checked baggage, the airline confirmed its existing policies remain unchanged, with passengers still able to purchase checked allowance up to 40 kg per person.
With this initiative, Jetstar aims to streamline gate-to-aircraft passenger flow, mitigate conflicts at the departure gate, and optimize aircraft turn times on the ramp. The new strategy offers fare flexibility to light travelers while monetizing overhead bin space—an increasingly scarce commodity in high-density commercial aircraft cabins.
