The Board of Directors of ITA Airways has approved its Business Plan for the 2026-2030 period, a roadmap that marks a turning point in the growth strategy of the Italian airline. This plan is built on three key pillars: route network expansion, fleet renewal with next-generation aircraft, and deeper integration with the Lufthansa Group.

More Long-Haul Routes from Rome Fiumicino

The focal point of this strategy will be strengthening the Rome Fiumicino hub, from which ITA Airways will launch new routes to North America, South America, Asia, and Africa. This expansion responds to growing global demand and aims to position Italy as a strategic bridge between continents, boosting inbound tourism as well as commercial and cultural exchanges.

In addition to intercontinental growth, the airline will also consolidate its presence in Europe and the Mediterranean region. Through commercial alliances and strategic agreements with other carriers, connectivity will be optimized, ensuring fast and efficient connections to the rest of the continent.

Flexibility will be a key factor: the network will dynamically adapt to changes in regulations, economic conditions, and geopolitical scenarios.

Fleet Renewal: Efficiency and Sustainability

Starting in 2026, ITA Airways will introduce one new long-haul aircraft annually, as part of a transition to a 100% next-generation fleet by 2030. The goal is clear: to reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions, meeting environmental commitments and European regulations, such as the elimination of free emission allowances (ETS).

The average number of aircraft during this period will be approximately 100, all equipped with cutting-edge technology, enhancing operational efficiency and the onboard experience.

Synergies with Lufthansa: A New Level of Competitiveness

ITA Airways will leverage its integration into the Lufthansa Group—the world’s fourth-largest airline group—to access new markets and strengthen its competitiveness through operational, commercial, and technological synergies. This collaboration will drive continuous innovation in passenger services and translate into higher revenues and cost reductions.

By early 2026, the airline will fully integrate into Star Alliance and advance the approval of key joint ventures for flights between Europe and North America and Europe and Japan. The loyalty programs Volare and Miles&More will also be integrated, alongside codeshare agreements and cooperation in cargo operations.

Growing Human Capital

The plan includes a personnel development program starting in 2026, aligned with network expansion and fleet evolution. Initiatives will be implemented to strengthen a sense of belonging within the organization, with the goal of establishing ITA Airways as a competitive and sustainable player on the global stage.

Sandro Pappalardo, Chairman of ITA Airways, stated: “We are laying the groundwork to remain Italy’s flagship carrier, with a strategic role for the national economy and for enhancing connectivity with the rest of the world.”

Joerg Eberhart, CEO and Managing Director of the airline, added: “With our network expansion, adoption of cutting-edge technologies, global alliances, and commitment to service excellence, we will ensure that more passengers choose to fly with ITA Airways. This will create new job opportunities and a positive economic impact for the air transport sector.”

ITA Airways is betting on a profound transformation, one that not only consolidates its position in the European market but also projects Italy as a pivotal hub in the future of global aviation.
