GOL to Suspend Direct Flights Between São Paulo and San José (Costa Rica) in Late November
Brazilian airline GOL has announced it will cease operations of its non-stop route between São Paulo (Guarulhos) and San José, Costa Rica, effective November 30, 2025. This measure is part of an adjustment process within its flight network and, according to the company, does not represent a step back in its international expansion plans.
Options for Affected Passengers
Passengers who already hold tickets for travel after the suspension date will have several alternatives:
- Reschedule their itinerary to other available destinations.
- Request a credit for future travel.
- Apply for a corresponding refund.
In the case of tickets purchased with miles, the process must be handled through the Smiles frequent flyer program. Customers who booked through travel agencies should contact them directly.

Position of Costa Rican Authorities
The Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT) confirmed that the last flight will take place on November 29. It explained that GOL’s decision is based on profitability criteria. However, the institution emphasized that the airline has shown openness to evaluating future alternatives, which keeps the possibility of reinstating the connection at a later time.
From Inauguration to Suspension
The route was inaugurated on November 12, 2024, with flights operated on a Boeing 737 MAX 8 with a capacity for 176 passengers. From the start, the established frequency was three weekly operations.
At that time, GOL projected a 20% to 30% growth in passenger traffic and expected load factors of 70% to 80%.
