The Government of Paraguay inaugurated a new boarding area this Friday at the Silvio Pettirossi International Airport, the country’s main air gateway. The expansion adds 2,245 m² of infrastructure, resulting from the complete conversion of the old terrace into a pre-boarding space equipped with updated systems.
The project, driven by the National Directorate of Civil Aviation (DINAC), constitutes the largest intervention in years on the airport infrastructure of Asunción. “We are not simply inaugurating a project; we are affirming a vision,” expressed the President of DINAC, Nelson Mendoza, during the official ceremony.
President Santiago Peña also participated in the ceremony and highlighted that this expansion is only “one part of the projects” planned for the airport. “We want passengers to enter quickly, board the plane, and leave as quickly as possible. That is technology, that is investment, that is the commitment of the officials,” he stated.
Sustained Growth and Historic Passenger Record
The inauguration coincides with a period of strong expansion in air travel demand. DINAC projects closing December with a historic record of 1,300,000 passengers in one year, a figure driven by increased flight frequencies and the hosting of major regional events, such as the Copa Sudamericana final.

Reinforced Security and Expanded Migrations
AVSEC Security: Capacity Quadrupled
- Previous area: 230 m²
- New area: 880 m²
- Queue capacity: from 30 to 120 passengers
- Control checkpoints: from 2 to 4, with high-tech X-ray machines and an automatic tray return system
This improvement allows for handling demand peaks without saturation, especially on days with sporting events and higher international traffic.
Migrations: Space Tripled
- Previous area: 135 m²
- New area: 500 m²
- Double positions: 5 (equivalent to 10 stations)
- Waiting capacity: from 25 to 100 people
The expansion eliminates the typical congestion of the early morning hours and speeds up the transit of passengers on international connections.
Comprehensive Redesign of Passenger Flow
DINAC reported that the old pre-boarding access has been permanently closed, centralizing all flows in the new sector. Furthermore, two telescopic boarding bridges were installed at gates 1 and 4, and air conditioning systems, LED lighting, restroom cores, and all internal signage were renovated.
Future Vision: Technological Leap in 2025
The modernization does not conclude with the inaugurated project. DINAC announced that next February will see the incorporation of:
- Five e-gates (automated biometric control gates)
- Two body scanners
- New additional X-ray equipment
“This project reinforces our commitment to a safe airport, prepared for the future,” stated Mendoza. The incorporation of biometric technology will place Silvio Pettirossi on standards similar to the busiest airports in South America.
