Spanish carrier Plus Ultra Líneas Aéreas has announced a comprehensive reorganization of its Latin American route network aimed at strengthening its positioning in key markets. This strategy focuses on a significant increase in frequencies to Peru, Argentina, and Venezuela, offsetting the temporary suspension of operations in Colombia due to the complex global economic environment.

Consolidation in Strategic Markets: Lima, Buenos Aires, and Caracas

The company seeks to consolidate its commitment to destinations showing higher growth projections and corporate value. The expansion plan is detailed as follows:

  • Peru (Lima): This becomes the airline’s flagship destination. Starting July 14, the Madrid-Lima route will reach seven weekly frequencies, offering daily connections for the first time to meet high demand between both nations.
  • Argentina (Buenos Aires): The route will see sustained growth, reaching five weekly frequencies effective July 6.
  • Venezuela (Caracas): Plus Ultra will bolster its operations to the Venezuelan capital from both Madrid and Tenerife, also reaching five weekly frequencies starting July 15.

This reorganization will allow the airline to respond to market demand with higher levels of efficiency and capacity.

Suspension of Colombia Operations: Critical Factors

Despite growth in the Southern Cone, Plus Ultra will temporarily suspend its flights to Colombia effective June 2. Currently, the company operates three weekly frequencies in the country (two to Bogotá and one to Cartagena de Indias).

The decision stems from a combination of geopolitical tensions and specific factors that have impacted the route’s profitability:

  • Fuel Costs: The price of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and standard Jet A-1 has doubled in just a few weeks, with costs significantly higher in Colombia than in other regional markets.
  • Tax Pressure: The heavy burden of taxes and airport fees in the Andean nation has hindered the continuity of operations.
  • Structural Costs: Rising operating costs and the inability to pass on fuel price hikes to previously issued tickets have rendered the route unviable under current conditions.

Commitment to Sustainability and the Passenger

Plus Ultra emphasized that these measures are necessary to ensure the long-term solvency and efficiency of the company amid a period of great uncertainty for the aviation sector.

For passengers affected by the suspension in Colombia, the carrier has activated assistance mechanisms including travel alternatives, refunds, or solutions in compliance with current regulations. The airline reaffirms its commitment to travel agencies and end-users during this planned transition process.
