Porter Airlines marks two decades in commercial aviation, a period defined by a major transformation that took it from an Eastern Canada-focused regional operator to the country’s third-largest airline, backed by a transcontinental jet fleet.

Two Decades of Disruption in the Canadian Market

Founded with its initial operating base at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, Porter Airlines has reshaped Canada’s competitive aviation landscape by positioning itself as an alternative dedicated to elevating customer service standards. From its original downtown hub, the carrier continues to strengthen regional connectivity across Eastern Canada and key US markets, supplementing its network with an expanded footprint at major gateways including Toronto Pearson, Hamilton, London, Ottawa, Montreal, and Halifax. Operating into secondary airports across the country’s most densely populated regions has enabled the airline to offer passengers greater flexibility and operational convenience.

Across its 20-year history, the airline’s key operational metrics reflect the impact of its business model:

  • Over 49 million passengers carried.
  • More than 784 million kilometers flown.
  • A network that currently spans 33 destinations and 131 routes, serving every Canadian province, the United States, and leisure markets in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America.
  • Bolstered interline and global connectivity through strategic alliances, anchored by its joint venture agreement with Air Transat.

Fleet Expansion and Transcontinental Growth

The carrier’s fastest phase of growth has unfolded over the past three years. In 2023, the airline executed a strategic pivot beyond its strictly regional perimeter, rolling out a transcontinental route network anchored by firm orders and options for up to 100 Embraer E195-E2 aircraft.

Current Fleet Breakdown

Porter Airlines’ operating fleet pairs next-generation mainline jets with high-density regional turboprops:

  • 56 Embraer E195-E2 aircraft currently in active revenue service.
  • 29 De Havilland Dash 8-400 turboprops.

This fleet composition underpins an economy-focused inflight product differentiated by a no-middle-seat cabin layout, complimentary beer and wine served in glassware, and free premium snacks across all scheduled flights.

“From the beginning, our goal was to redefine economy travel and make flying an experience people look forward to. Two decades on, that relentless focus has driven our growth into Canada’s third-largest carrier, injecting durable competition and restoring service standards that had been missing for years,” said Michael Deluce, CEO of Porter Airlines.

Industry Recognition and Milestone Celebrations

The airline’s passenger product has earned accolades from global industry bodies and travel publications, including:

  • Top 10 International Airline by Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast Traveler.
  • Best Regional Airline in North America by Skytrax.
  • Best Economy Class in the USA Today Readers’ Choice Awards.
  • Named among the Top 3 Regional Airlines in the World by the Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) and Skytrax.

Anniversary Campaign and Loyalty Perks

To mark its 20th anniversary, the carrier launched a commemorative merchandise line available through its digital storefront, porter20.com. The collection features scale collector models of the Embraer E195-E2, co-branded apparel developed with Kuwalla Tee, blind-box mini collectibles, caps, and plush replicas of its brand mascot, Mr. Porter.

Meanwhile, for the nearly four million members of its VIPorter frequent flyer program, the airline rolled out a promotional “20 days of 20,000 points” giveaway. The campaign awards 20,000 points daily between October 15 and November 3 to eligible Canadian members who have flown or redeemed points between October 1, 2025, and November 2, 2026.

Anniversary festivities also included customer activations across several airport terminals and a themed charter-style service operating between Montreal Metropolitan and Vancouver International Airport, featuring dedicated cabin decor and upgraded onboard catering.

Looking ahead, Porter Airlines intends to sustain its delivery schedule and network ramp-up, with an ongoing mandate to reshape North American commercial aviation competition to the direct benefit of the flying public.
