The British airline EasyJet will reduce the size of hand luggage from February 10 next year, a measure that will encourage more people to pay to choose their seat or check a suitcase in the hold.

According to the new policy, all passengers can carry a small bag for free, but only those who pay for a seat at the front of the plane or extra legroom can also carry a larger bag to go in the overhead compartment.

The airline said the new baggage rules, which bring its approach closer to its big rival Ryanair, would be positive for customers.

“Our new policy will improve boarding and punctuality for everyone, as well as give our customers certainty of what they will have with them on board,” easyJet’s customer and sales manager Robert Carey said in a statement.
