Spanish airline Iberia announced Wednesday that it will equip, starting in 2025, its Airbus A320neo aircraft with Airbus’ new Airspace L overhead bins, increasing its cabin baggage capacity by 60%.
“We are very proud to announce this contract with Airbus, one of our key partners, because thanks to the new L compartments we will improve our customers’ experience. This improvement translates into faster boarding and deplaning, which also makes it easier for us to continue to meet our strict punctuality targets and provide excellent service to our customers,” commented Alberto Garcia, Iberia’s Director of Fleet Planning.
The new Airspace L compartments
The new Airspace L compartments share common parts with the Airspace XL compartments, which reduces spare parts storage costs in mixed fleets and fits perfectly with the Airspace design language. In addition, a simplified mechanism will increase reliability and reduce maintenance costs. Optimized plug & play replacement of in-service cabins, which can be performed in three to five days, will enable Iberia to minimize aircraft downtime.

EFW (Elbe Flugzeugwerke GmbH) will manufacture the compartments, which are made of ultralight and highly stable composite products. Production will take place in a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility that employs measures such as photovoltaics and bioenergy.
Iberia Mantenimiento has been selected by the airline to perform the retrofit of these aircraft at its maintenance hangar in Madrid, a facility with the capacity to handle 10 aircraft simultaneously. The company performs the heavy overhauls for Iberia, Iberia Express and all members of the International Airlines Group (Vueling, British Airways and Aer Lingus).
Airbus announced earlier this month that Lufthansa will be the first customer to incorporate Airspace L overhead bins. Starting in January 2025, the airline will equip 38 Airbus A320 aircraft.
