Brazil: Porto Alegre Airport closes indefinitely due to heavy rains

Porto Alegre Airport has announced the cessation of its operations for an “undetermined” time, as “there is no forecast of resuming its activity” after the severe flooding caused by the two storms that have been hitting the state of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) since last week.

To comply with airport legislation, a NOTAM or ‘Notice to Airman’ has been issued with a completion date of May 30, an internationally recognized document intended to disclose temporary changes and restrictions that may have an impact on air operations.

In addition, the airport has advised passengers to contact their airline for more information about their flights, according to a statement.

The Brazilian aerodrome is located in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, and is operated by Fraport, which also operates another airport in the country, in Fortaleza.

In March, air traffic on both infrastructures fell by 4.4% compared to the same month of the previous year, to one million passengers.

In total, 1.4 million people have been affected in some way by a storm that for the next few days will bring temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius, as the water level begins to drop, although it remains above five centimeters in some parts of Porto Alegre.

For these days they have decreed a state of alert for rains with volumes that can exceed up to 100 millimeters, falling mainly in areas of the central north and east of the state, which has 425 of its 497 municipalities affected, InfoBae reported.
