Delta and Amazon Challenge In-Flight Connectivity Market with «Leo» Satellite Network Integration

Delta Air Lines and Amazon have announced a long-term strategic collaboration to implement high-speed, low-latency internet across the airline’s fleet. Through the Amazon Leo satellite constellation, both companies aim to redefine the onboard digital experience, optimizing both passenger entertainment and productivity.

A New Era of Airborne Connectivity

Delta has taken a decisive step in its innovation strategy by selecting Amazon’s Low Earth Orbit (LEO) technology for its domestic and international flights. This agreement not only strengthens the airline’s digital infrastructure but also positions Amazon as a direct competitor in the aviation satellite connectivity market.

The airline plans to begin installing this technology on 500 aircraft starting in 2028. This deployment will allow passengers to access browsing capabilities similar to those in their homes or offices, eliminating the traditional limitations of in-flight Wi-Fi.

Leo Ultra Technology: The Core of the System

The service will be backed by the Leo Ultra antenna, described as the fastest commercial phased-array antenna in production. This aviation-grade hardware allows for full utilization of Amazon’s network, which is designed to offer:

  • High Speed and Low Latency: Ideal for seamless video streaming, gaming, and video calls.
  • Unmatched Upload Capacity: Unlike previous systems, passengers will be able to share heavy photos and videos in real-time or securely send business files during the flight.
  • Global Connectivity: The network of thousands of satellites in low orbit ensures coverage even on the most remote routes.

Ed Bastian, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Delta, highlighted that this agreement provides the fastest and most cost-effective technology available to connect today’s world, deepening the relationship with a global leader that shares their ambition for innovation.

Synergy with Amazon Web Services and Artificial Intelligence

The alliance between Delta and Amazon is not new. Since 2020, the airline has used Amazon Web Services (AWS) as its preferred cloud provider, migrating nearly 600 applications to Amazon’s infrastructure.

The new agreement plans to integrate AWS, Amazon Leo connectivity, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to personalize every stage of the journey. This integration will enable tools used by Delta employees to improve customer service and operational efficiency in real-time.

For his part, Andy Jassy, President and CEO of Amazon, noted that Leo was designed to provide reliable internet to billions of people, and that Delta’s scale will transform the travel experience for tens of millions of passengers annually.

Delta Sync Ecosystem and Strategic Partnerships

Delta has maintained a steady pace of modernization. In 2023, it introduced free Wi-Fi for members of its SkyMiles loyalty program in collaboration with T-Mobile. Currently, more than 1,150 aircraft feature streaming-quality connectivity, and transpacific routes are expected to be integrated by the fall of 2026.

The addition of Amazon Leo complements existing partnerships with other industry leaders:

  • Viasat and Hughes: Delta will continue to work with these providers to ensure that each aircraft type has the appropriate technology according to its mission.
  • Delta Sync: The airline’s connectivity portal will continue to offer exclusive content from brands such as Paramount+, YouTube, Starbucks, and Crunchyroll.

With more than 165,000 individual screens across its global fleet, Delta reaffirms its commitment to being the benchmark in-flight entertainment provider. The arrival of Amazon Leo in 2028 marks a milestone in the airline’s roadmap, promising a transition toward a fully connected travel experience where the boundary between the office, the home, and the aircraft cabin definitively disappears.
