US to Invest $870 Million in Airport Infrastructure and Operational Modernization
In a strategic move to bolster the national airport network, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy announced the allocation of $870 million in federal funding aimed at improving airport infrastructure, elevating safety standards, and expanding passenger services.
The funds will be administered by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) through the Airport Infrastructure Grants program. In total, the agency will award 339 grants benefiting airport facilities across 44 states and two territories.
Funding Distribution and Key Projects
The capital injection spans major international hubs to strategic regional airports. Key highlighted projects include:
- Los Angeles International Airport: Receiving the largest single share of $289 million to construct a new terminal access roadway.
- Miami International Airport: Allocated $50 million dedicated to a comprehensive terminal roof reconstruction.
- Akron-Canton Airport (Ohio): Awarded $9.1 million to rehabilitate passenger boarding bridges (PBBs) and rebuild key operational facilities.
- Juneau International Airport (Alaska): $4.2 million designated for replacing snow removal equipment.
- Charleston International Airport (South Carolina): $3.7 million assigned for terminal expansion.
- Sugar Land Regional Airport (Texas): $3.5 million earmarked for runway reconstruction work.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy emphasized the scope of the measure within the broader context of national transport development:
“From our regional hubs to some of America’s busiest airports, we are investing in critical infrastructure that will provide American families with a smoother, more efficient travel experience for years to come. Modernizing our runway infrastructure is part of our effort to usher in a Golden Era of Transportation.”
Meanwhile, FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford highlighted the rapid pace of the grant awards:
“We are making airports safer and more convenient for travelers across the U.S. We are delivering grants at a record pace to ensure we keep up with the growing demand for travel.”
Technical Scope of the Program
Under the Airport Infrastructure Grant program guidelines, awarded funds can be used across a broad range of operational development and planning areas, including:
- General airport planning and development.
- Passenger terminal expansion and upgrades.
- Baggage handling system modernizations.
- Rehabilitation of runways and taxiways.
- Improvements to roadway access and ground transportation traffic flow.
- Various infrastructure projects tied to operational safety.
With the accelerated release of these funds, the FAA aims to respond immediately to growing air traffic demand across the United States, ensuring that the physical and operational infrastructure of terminals meets the highest standards of efficiency and operational safety in the years ahead.
