Lufthansa Group Bolsters MAX Commitment with Order for 20 Boeing 737-10 Jets
Lufthansa Group announced on Thursday that it will exercise options to acquire 20 Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft. These purchase rights were initially secured as part of a 2023 order for 40 MAX 8 units, which included a total of 60 options for additional narrowbody aircraft from the MAX family.
By exercising these first 20 options, the airline group significantly strengthens its long-term capacity planning. Deliveries of these new aircraft are scheduled to commence in the early 2030s. Their induction is primarily aimed at the phased replacement of older Airbus A320 family aircraft across the group’s operations.
Boeing 737 MAX 10 Performance, Efficiency, and Capacity
As the largest variant in the Boeing 737 MAX family, the 737-10 delivers enhanced passenger comfort across the group’s network and offers higher seating capacity compared to the MAX 8s already in its order book.
From an economic and environmental standpoint, the operating advantages of this variant are substantial compared to the airframes it will replace:
- Fuel Burn Reduction: Fuel consumption is reduced by approximately 30 percent.
- Cost Efficiency: Driven by increased seat capacity, unit costs decrease by roughly 20%.
- Environmental Sustainability: Directly contributes to lowering carbon emissions and streamlines operational efficiency across European routes.
Financial Investment and Outlook Toward 2035
Valued at approximately $3.4 billion, the transaction forms an integral part of the carrier’s ongoing fleet modernization program.
Under this investment strategy focused on efficient and sustainable technology, the airline group anticipates taking delivery of more than 250 new aircraft through 2035.
