China Eastern to Connect Shanghai with Buenos Aires via Auckland Starting December
China Eastern Airlines announced the launch of a new air route linking Asia and South America via New Zealand. Beginning in December 2025, the airline will operate flights between Shanghai Pudong Airport and Buenos Aires Ezeiza Airport, with a stopover in Auckland. This expansion marks a strategic milestone in global connectivity.
The news was unveiled during a ceremony in Shanghai, attended by New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Louise Upston. Luxon emphasized that New Zealand’s geographic location at the crossroads of the Pacific makes it an ideal hub for strengthening air links between Asia and Latin America.

“This new connection from Shanghai to Buenos Aires via Auckland will foster a more resilient and diverse aviation network. It is estimated that the route will generate an additional $48 million in annual visitor spending for New Zealand,” stated the Prime Minister.
China Eastern will initially operate two weekly flights on this new route, in addition to its existing daily service between Shanghai and Auckland.
Wang Zhiqing, President of China Eastern Airlines, noted that this new route is part of the airline’s strategy to “fly farther, internationally, and into emerging markets.” With its operational hub in Shanghai, China Eastern is accelerating the development of a global aviation network.
The route will enhance economic and trade exchanges between Asia, New Zealand, and South America, catering to the growing travel demands of international passengers.
